RAMALLAH, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian presidency urged on Thursday UN General Assembly (UNGA) member states not to vote in favor of a U.S.-drafted resolution against the Islamic Hamas movement.

The presidency affirmed that it held contacts with world governments including the members of the Arab and Islamic blocs in the UN to foil the U.S. draft resolution, reported the official Palestinian news agency WAFA.

The vote was expected to be held later on Thursday. Backed by U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, the U.S. resolution will condemn Hamas' rocket attacks against Israel.

The resolution also reportedly demands end of violence on part of Hamas. It comes after a series of Palestinian marches which demanded the lifting of the Israeli blockade on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip since March 30.

If passed, it would be the first UNGA resolution to condemn the Palestinian resistance.

The Palestinians have severed ties with the United States after President Donald Trump moved the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and declared the disputed city as Israel's capital.

Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of their future independent state, but Israel, which annexed East Jerusalem in the 1967 war, already declared the whole city as its capital in 1980, in a move that has not been recognized by most of the international community.
