TAIYUAN, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- It has become a common consensus of the international community to promote the green and low-carbon transformation against the backdrop of increasing climate change challenges around the globe, and many have called for strengthened cooperation in this regard.

Such views are echoed by attendees of the 2025 Taiyuan Energy Low-Carbon Development Forum, held from Sept. 27 to 28 in Taiyuan, capital of north China's Shanxi Province.

Hot topics in the field of energy and low carbon are the focus of discussion of these attendees, including guests from 32 countries and regions, representatives of renowned international organizations and leaders of multinational corporations, as well as scholars and experts.

Liu Zhenmin, China's special envoy for climate change, warned of accelerating of global climate change crisis, citing reports that the global average temperature in 2024 was 1.55 degrees Celsius higher than the average pre-industrial level between 1850 and 1900, surpassing the previous record set in 2023.

"The increasing frequency of extreme weather events worldwide and deteriorating natural ecosystems pose severe threats to socio-economic development of human society," Liu said. "This demands enhanced crisis awareness and urgency from all countries in addressing climate change."

Participants unanimously agreed that green transformation represents not only an imperative for climate action but also a strategic opportunity for fostering new economic growth drivers and enhancing national competitiveness.

"Developed countries need to help developing nations so that we have more choices to use green energy," said Peter Pepa Bonas Mdalangwila, a hydrogeologist from Tanzania.

Wan Jinsong, deputy head of the National Energy Administration, highlighted China's remarkable clean energy achievements.

"China has built the world's largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system," Wan said. "By the end of July 2025, China's combined installed wind and solar power capacity had reached 1.68 billion kilowatts, with an average annual growth rate of 28 percent."

China has led the world in installed wind power capacity for 15 consecutive years and in installed photovoltaic power capacity for a decade, Wan added.

China has not only advanced its own energy transition and low-carbon development, but also strengthened cooperation with the international community to safeguard a community with a shared future for humanity.

Wan said that China has established green energy cooperation with over 100 countries and regions, implementing landmark projects in countries including Brazil, Pakistan and Cuba, the guest country of honor at this year's forum.

Participants at the forum noted that the green and low-carbon transition will amount to a sweeping, profound and systemic transformation of the economy and society. It demands a comprehensive overhaul of energy systems, industrial structures, ways of life, and consumption concepts -- a process that calls for the shared engagement of the entire international community.

"The issue we are discussing today transcends national borders and concerns the fate of humanity. It is a joint battle against climate change. We are well aware that climate change is not a regional issue, but a global one. This is a struggle that can only be won by working together," said Oláh Lajos, deputy speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly.

Since its inception in 2016, the forum has evolved into an internationally influential platform for high-level dialogue and cooperation in the energy sector. ■
