WARSAW, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Warsaw District Court in Poland has blocked the extradition of Ukrainian national Volodymyr Z., who was arrested in Poland for alleged involvement in the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions, to Germany, the Polish Press Agency reported on Friday.
The court ordered the immediate release of the 49-year-old man, ruling that the evidence presented by the German authorities was too vague to justify extradition, Judge Dariusz Lubowski said.
Volodymyr Z. denied any involvement in the explosions, stating that he was in Ukraine at the time of the incident.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on social media platform X on Friday that "the case is closed."
The suspect was detained on Sept. 30 in Pruszkow, about 15 km west of Warsaw, under a European arrest warrant issued by a German court. The Warsaw District Court approved a seven-day detention on Oct. 1 and extended it by 40 days on Oct. 6.
On Oct. 7, Tusk said that prosecuting or extraditing the suspect would not serve Poland's national interest. He stressed that the arrest had followed proper judicial procedures, but that the final decision rested with the Polish court. ■
