SINGAPORE, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Singapore reported a Zika virus case on Wednesday, the first of its kind in 2018 since the disease was thought to have been eradicated from the country in September 2017.

The National Environment Agency published the case, which was diagnosed and reported to the authorities last Thursday, on its website.

However, the agency said currently there is no active Zika cluster, indicating the case could be an isolated one.

Singapore recorded 61 reported Zika cases in 2017.

The Zika virus, originating in Brazil, is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito and can also spread during sex.

Scientists have linked infections during pregnancy to stillbirths and birth defects such as microcephaly, where a baby's head is abnormally small.
