ANKARA, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump discussed the latest developments in Syria in a phone conversation late Wednesday.

The presidents exchanged views following a suspected chemical attack during the weekend in Douma, a Syrian town northeast of capital Damascus, Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

The phone conversation occurred after Trump warned Russia, which supports Syria's Bashar al-Assad government, saying U.S. missiles "will be coming" in response to the alleged chemical attack that reportedly killed dozens of people in Douma.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said earlier in the day that "the Assad regime must leave Syria," alleging the regime has killed nearly 1 million people with airstrikes and bombs.

In recent months, however, Ankara has been working closely with Moscow, a major ally of the Assad government, on Syrian issues.

Earlier this week, Erdogan also discussed the situation in Syria and Turkish-Russian relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a phone conversation. Erdogan reportedly expressed satisfaction with the tripartite summit on Syria, which was held in Ankara on April 4, with the participation of Turkey, Russia and Iran.
