LONDON, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has been out of intensive care following brain surgery, the English Premier League side announced on Wednesday.

The club said in a statement, "Sir Alex no longer needs intensive care and will continue rehabilitation as an inpatient.

"His family have been overwhelmed by the level of support and good wishes but continue to request privacy as this will be vital for recovery."

The 76-year-old suffered a brain haemorrhage and had emergency surgery at Manchester's Royal Salford Hospital on Saturday.

Ferguson retired in 2013 after leading Manchester United to 38 trophies during 26 years in charge. He was last seen in public on April 29 when he presented Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger with a commemorative trophy before United's 2-1 victory over the Gunners.
