German gov't hopes for political stability in Spain after PM ousting

BERLIN, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Steffen Seibert, the official spokesperson for German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), has expressed hope on Friday that a "stable government" can be formed in Spain following the abrupt ousting of the country's scandal-ridden Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

Seibert said Berlin would offer to cooperate closely with Madrid in a continuation of the long-standing political partnership and friendship between the two European Union (EU) members. The government spokesperson refused to comment on democratic processes in Spain however.

Rajoy became the first prime minister in the history of Spain to be deposed in a no-confidence vote on Friday. The politician was hereby felled by a corruption scandal surrounding his conservative PP party and was replaced by the Social Democrat Pedro Sanchez.

Nevertheless, Seibert offered some words of praise for Rajoy whom he credited with helping engineer Spain's economic recovery.

Spain has benefited from strong annual increases in gross domestic product (GDP) and falling unemployment in recent years after being heavily-hit by the 2007/08 financial crash and subsequent sovereign debt crisis.
