Tokyo shares close higher on yen's depreciation, BOJ monetary easing pledge

TOKYO, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo shares closed higher Wednesday on the yen's depreciation against the U.S. dollar as well as the Bank of Japan's pledge to maintain its monetary easing policy on Tuesday.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 192.98 points, or 0.86 percent, from Tuesday to close at 22,746.70.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 16.47 points, or 0.94 percent, higher at 1,769.76.

Trading volume on the main section came to 1,767.25 million shares, down from Tuesday's 1,972.43 million shares.

Among all shares listed on the First Section, advancing issues outnumbered decliners 1,144 to 888, with 71 ending the day unchanged.

Gainers were led by iron and steel, nonferrous metal and miscellaneous product issues.

The day's turnover was around 2,965.2 billion yen (26.45 billion U.S. dollars). Enditem
