ABUJA, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria on Monday pledged to embark on an awareness campaign across the country to tackle rising human trafficking.

The pledge was made by Julie Okah-Donli, director general of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons, in Abuja, Nigeria's capital.

Okah-Donli told reporters that a lot of Nigerians are now aware of the dangers of human trafficking and steps to take when they see suspicious movements around them.

"People now make phone calls to the agency to volunteer information," she said, adding that when promised jobs in certain places, they can call the agency to confirm the genuineness of such promises.

According to Okah-Donli, the agency has rescued well over 10,000 victims and trained and rehabilitated many of them since the inception of the agency in 2003.
