COLOMBO, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan police on Wednesday said 30 people were killed in road accidents during the island country's new year holiday while reportedly at least 200 people were injured in accidents across the country.

Head of the Police Motor Traffic Division DIG Ajith Rohana told journalists that over 8,000 police officers had been deployed to maintain law and order during the Sri Lankan new year holiday which lasted from April 13 to Wednesday.

As many as 1,270 drunk drivers had been arrested during the period.

Rohana said police had also filed over 34,000 cases against drivers committing other traffic offenses.

The number of accidents during the new year festival increased compared to the previous year, the Department Of Government Information said, citing the Colombo National Hospital.

Sri Lankans observed a national holiday on April 14 on the occasion of the local new year.
